Which Book Should You Read First?

If you have already read Mastering Poker Math Volume 1, this is excellent.  Mastering Poker Math Volume 2 is a great follow-up book for you. However,  consider reading Mastering Poker Math Volume 1 if you think its topics will provide you with a solid math foundation before reading this book.

If you are an advanced player and feel confident with the information presented in Mastering Poker Math Volume 1, then consider skipping it and continue reading this book.

The choice is yours!

How Important is the Math in Texas No-Limit Hold 'em?
I will make an educated guess that poker math is (at least) 40% of the game.   It might be more.  Someday a computer program may produce a more accurate percentage.

It is intriguing to observe how few players have a solid grasp of the math.  Since math is such a massive part of the game, learning it at a visceral level can help you gain a strong competitive edge over most other players.

Note: In the highest levels of the game, where the mental game increases in value, it can be argued that poker math has less importance—especially in cash games.  That being said, even at those nosebleed levels, knowing the poker math at a deep level can give a player a decided advantage.  Any edge at the highest levels is worth plenty.

Integrating the Math with the Rest of Your Game

Integrating the math with the other parts of your game will unleash its full power.  Learning math in a vacuum is a huge mistake.

By combining poker math with your entire game, you will maximize your expertise and skills. This is emphasized repeatedly throughout the text due to its importance.

Why I Wrote Mastering Poker Math Volume 2
After completing Mastering Poker Math Volume 1, I continued to take notes during and after games.Over time, I realized that although there was a great deal of useful information in the first book, more robust and practical math became apparent for the intermediate to advanced players.

Consequently, Mastering Poker Math Volume 2 came into existence.

This work deep dives into probabilities, equities, range analysis, trapping, disciplined folding, the metagame, and combining these skills with the rest of your game. It also streamlines (and enhances) critical concepts taught in Mastering Poker Math Volume 1.

In summary, Mastering Poker Math Volumes 1 and 2 have both been written to fill a significant gap in the hands-on mathematics of Texas No-Limit Hold 'em.
Notes:
  1. If you are only looking for poker math basics, there is a lot of excellent information on the web.
  2. However, if you are looking for more in-depth poker math material, you have come to the right place.   Both Mastering Poker Math Volumes 1 and 2 provide you with practical, common-sense knowledge of math and how to combine it with the rest of your game.  The material is presented as straightforward as possible without the complexity—and without oversimplifying.
"A teacher is never a giver of truth—he is a guide, a pointer
to the truth that each student must find for himself.
A good teacher is merely a catalyst."—Bruce Lee

My Poker Journey
I was drawn to the Texas No-Limit Hold 'em due to my profound enjoyment of competitive and strategic sports and games coupled with my education and experience in engineering and business.

It seems natural that I was drawn into Texas No-Limit Hold 'em initially because of the competition,  strategy, complexity, poker math, critical thinking, decision making, problem-solving, and more.

The skills learned in poker continue to drive my interest in the game since there aren't any absolute answers, only improving one's skills by increments—just like in everyday life.  I enjoy the intricacy and challenge of the game, along with the eloquent, powerful, and practical mathematics behind it.
